FUNDAMENTALS OF LANDSCAPE PAINTING - BOULDER

(Awaken Your Own Artistic Genious!)

Whether you are new to painting outdoors, or an experienced artist ready to elevate your landscape painting to its highest potential, this ongoing course will empower you with the fundamental skills necessary to create successful paintings in an outdoor environment. The class focuses on building your plein air skills from “the ground up”. This will be achieved through lectures, instructor demonstrations and critiques, as well as students completing paintings at various outdoor locations in the greater Boulder area. This course teaches you to:

• Use the proper equipment needed to complete paintings outdoors

• Simplify paintings into a series of basic shapes and values

• Recognize the 4 major value groups of the landscape, used to create clear, concise
  compositions

• Understand the 5 types of light, and their effect on all forms in the landscape

• Use the concepts of atmospheric and linear perspective to create the effect of “distance”
   within a painting

• Successfully mix a full range of outdoor colors in oil or other media

• Show an increased sensitivity for the character of brush strokes, texture and “feeling” to
  describe the landscape
